HYPOCALCEMIA (MILK FEVER, BIRTH PARALYSIS)
It is a disease that is frequently encountered in cows, sheep and goats and results in paralysis as a result of the decrease in serum calcium amount after birth. The need for calcium increases sharply with the increase in milk yield after birth. Birth paralysis usually occurs within 72 hours of birth. However, cases that occur one week before or one week after birth can also be seen.
There are many symptoms of hypocalcemia. Some of these include twitching of the muscles, trembling of the back, lying on the chest, resting the head on the hunger pangs and coma. When treatment is delayed, these stages follow each other.
The most important cause of the disease is the unbalanced Calcium / Phosphorus ratio. This ratio is from 1/1 to 2/1, and it occurs as a result of incorrect feeding, especially in the dry period. In addition, the activation of calcium in the bones and Calcium / Phosphorus absorption disorders in the intestines can also cause hypocalcemia.
