PICA (EATING DISORDER)
Pica is a sickness caused by the consumption of non-food things. Pica is a disease that affects livestock, particularly cattle. It is caused by cattle gnawing and licking walls, wood and non-food items. Problems such as drinking and licking urine are also symptoms of pica. Eating rubber or plastic, sand, excrement, sheep eating wool, and cattle grazing near dumps are also considered signs of pica disease. Botulismus, foreign substance disease (RPT), and tongue rolling disease may occur due to pica disease. Pica disease can sometimes be combined with ketosis. In such cases, the cow refuses the concentrated feed and consumes the roughage. Cows grazing near the garbage can swallow foreign substances or eat carrion due to this disease. In cows that eat spoiled materials and carrions, botulismus disease occurs with symptoms such as imbalance, paralysis, muscle weakness, difficulty in swallowing and chewing, lying on its side and excessive salivation, and the cow dies. Calves licking each other's belly is also a sign of pica. Although there are more than one reasons for the formation of this disease in a cow, mineral deficiencies of magnesium, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, phosphorus and cobalt can be considered as the leading cause. After the development of pica disease, the same regulations must be made, mineral additives must be added to the feed, and the ration must be regulated.
